What to Say at School Drop-Off

What to Say at School Drop-Off

The first day of school—or even just the first few weeks—can bring up big feelings for little ones.

Here are some ways to handle school drop-off with compassion and confidence.

1. Acknowledge Their Feelings 💬

Instead of brushing off their emotions with “You’re fine” or “Don’t cry,” name what they might be feeling.

Try saying:

“It looks like you’re feeling upset. Starting something new can feel a little scary. At home I take care of you, and at school your teacher takes care of you.”

2. Use Simple Everyday Examples 🏠 ➡️ 🏫

For example:

“When you’re sad at home, I give you a hug. When you’re sad at school, your teacher can give you a hug too.”

“When you get an ouchie at home, I give you a bandage. At school, your teacher gives you a bandage.”

3. Set Them Up for Success 🌞

Sometimes separation anxiety is amplified when a child is tired, hungry, or not feeling well. Make sure your child is:

• Well rested

• Had a nourishing breakfast

• Healthy and comfortable

Always Say Goodbye 👋

It can be tempting to sneak away while your child is distracted to avoid tears—but this actually undermines trust. Saying goodbye consistently, even when hard, reassures your child that you will always be honest about leaving and that you will come back.
