The Best Wired Headphones for older Kids (and Why Wired Matters)
The Best Wired Headphones for Kids (and Why Wired Matters)
Bluetooth headphones emit low-level electromagnetic frequency radiation and while the research is still developing, placing a wireless device directly on a child's head for hours at a time is not something we are comfortable with. Children's brains are still developing and are more vulnerable to environmental exposures than adult brains. Wired headphones are a simple, affordable swap that eliminates this concern entirely.
Beyond EMF, there is a sound quality argument too. Wired headphones consistently deliver cleaner, more stable audio than Bluetooth at the same price point. No compression, no lag, no connectivity issues.
We tested three options on a ten year old all wired, all comfortable, all stable on the head. Here is what we found.
Sony MDR-ZX110 — $9 The most basic option and honestly a great starting point. Lightweight, foldable, and incredibly affordable. No inline controls, no mic, but the sound is clear and it fits comfortably on younger kids. A great first pair.
ARTIX CL750 — $35 Our middle pick and probably the best value. Noise isolating, foldable, with an inline mic and volume control on the cord — which is important for kids so they are not cranking the volume on the device itself. The cloth-covered cord is more durable than standard plastic cables. Comfortable cushioned ear cups that stayed put during testing.
Superlux HD 330PRO — $49 This one surprised us. Professional-grade sound at under $50. Velvet ear cushions, adjustable headband, 40mm drivers that deliver rich, balanced audio. Designed for studio use which means it is built to last. The best sound of the three by a significant margin. A great option for older kids who use headphones heavily for music or focused work.
What to look for in kids headphones: Wired over wireless every time. Look for inline volume control so your child is not maxing out the device. Soft cushioned ear cups for long wear. Foldable design for travel and school bags. And a cord that feels durable — cloth-covered is better than plain plastic.
You do not need to spend $200. Any of these three will serve your child well.
