My Simple, Non-Toxic Hair Care Routine for My Curly Haired Kids
My Simple, Non-Toxic Hair Care Routine for My Curly Haired Kids
If you have a child with curly hair, you already know this: curly hair is very thirsty. Once I really understood that, everything changed for us.
Three important products that work for our current routine:
Conditioner: Love this one from Living Libations and the shampoo to go with it
Brush: My favorite brush! Everyone in my family uses!
Spray bottle: Need to keep curls hydrated!
Let’s get into it all:
Right now, my favorite conditioner for my kids is Living Libations, especially for curly hair.
It’s deeply nourishing without being heavy or synthetic, and it actually hydrates curls instead of just coating them. I love that it supports the hair rather than fighting its natural texture.
I use it as their regular conditioner, and sometimes as a deeper conditioning mask if hair feels extra dry — after swimming, lots of sun, or during winter.
Curly hair needs oils and moisture that absorb, not ingredients that just sit on top.
The Spray Bottle Is Non-Negotiable
This is probably the most important part of our routine.
I never brush curly hair dry.
I keep a simple spray bottle filled with:
• ¾ filtered water
• ¼ conditioner
That’s it.
Before brushing, I spray the hair generously so it’s damp. This instantly rehydrates curls, makes detangling easier, and prevents breakage. It also helps refresh curls between washes without needing to shampoo again.
Curly hair drinks this up.
The Brush Matters More Than You Think
The brush we use is just as important as the products.
I use a gentle detangling brush that glides through damp hair without pulling or snapping curls. I always start brushing from the bottom up, slowly working through knots instead of ripping through them.
This makes a huge difference not just for hair health, but for everyone’s nervous system too.
Less pulling = fewer tears = calmer mornings and night.
