Could Low Magnesium Be Affecting Your Child’s Focus — or Even Causing Those Nighttime Leg Aches?
Could Low Magnesium Be Affecting Your Child’s Focus — or Even Causing Those Nighttime Leg Aches?
If your child struggles to sit still, stay focused, or often wakes up at night complaining of “growing pains,” magnesium might be part of the picture.
A 1997 study published in the Magnesium Research Journal found that 95% of children with ADHD had low magnesium levels — whether measured in their hair, blood, or red blood cells. In a follow-up trial, supplementing with magnesium for six months significantly improved hyperactivity and focus, with symptoms returning once supplementation stopped.
While magnesium’s role in attention and mood is well-documented, many parents don’t realize it also helps muscles relax and nerves communicate properly. Low levels can show up as nighttime leg cramps, restless sleep, or the “growing pains” so many kids experience.
Magnesium is often depleted by modern diets (especially in kids who avoid leafy greens or whole grains), stress, and even certain medications. The good news: gentle, consistent replenishment can make a real difference.
My Favorite Ways to Support Magnesium Levels
These are a few of my favorite, gentle ways to incorporate magnesium — especially for kids and busy parents who could all use a little more calm and balance:
1. 🛁 Ancient Minerals Bath Salts
A warm bath with magnesium flakes or salts is one of the easiest ways for the body to absorb magnesium through the skin. It’s calming before bed and can help ease muscle tightness.
2. ✨ Ora Magnesium Powder
A clean, well-absorbed form that’s easy to mix into water or smoothies. Emily has been using this one for her son and he loves the taste. It’s tangerine flavored!
3. 💆♀️ Berhaus Glass Bottle Magnesium Oil
This topical magnesium spray is designed to be applied directly to the skin. Bonus - it comes in a beautiful glass bottle. I like to apply to legs or feet before bed to support muscle relaxation and better sleep.
This is one that was recommended to my daughter from her doctor and has been wonderful so far.
