Bug + Tick Sprays
My Go To Non Toxic Bug Sprays and Bite Care for Kids
When your kids are outside all summer, bug protection matters just as much as sunscreen. But like everything else, not all bug sprays are created equal.
Many conventional options are filled with ingredients I personally try to avoid, especially when we are applying them daily and directly onto our kids’ skin. So I focus on simple, effective options with cleaner ingredients that still get the job done.
Here are the ones that have been working really well for us.
Bug sprays and repellents I use
I rotate between a few depending on where we are and how bad the bugs are.
Primally Pure bug spray (CODE DRORGANICMOMMY10) is one I reach for often. It is made with non toxic, organic ingredients and is a really easy everyday option that feels good using on my kids.
Badger bug spray (CODE DRORGANICMOMMY) is always in our bag. It works well and is free of DEET, synthetic fragrance, parabens, and phthalates. I also love their balm version for easy application on kids.
3 Moms Organics TickWise spray is another great option, especially when we are somewhere with ticks. It covers both ticks and mosquitoes which makes it really practical.
Living Libations Forager’s Balm is another favorite. I use this more as a multi purpose product but it also works well for bug protection.
For younger kids or when I want something even simpler, I love mosquito stickers like Nantucket Spider and Natural Patch. These stick onto clothing instead of going directly on the skin and are made with essential oils.
A little trick I sometimes use is organic vanilla extract on the skin. It is simple and surprisingly helpful in mild bug situations.
What I use for bug bites
Even with the best prevention, bites still happen.
Badger balm is great to soothe irritation right away.
Living Libations Forager’s Balm is another go to for calming the skin after a bite.
And I always keep a Bug Bite Thing suction tool on hand. It helps remove irritants from the bite and can make a big difference, especially for kids who react more strongly.
How I think about bug protection overall
I always try to start with barriers first. Lightweight long sleeves, loose pants, and avoiding peak bug times when possible can go a long way.
When we do need sprays, I keep it simple and reapply as needed rather than overdoing it all at once.
And just like with sunscreen, I think it is about balance. We want our kids outside, playing, exploring, and enjoying nature. Having a few safer options on hand makes that feel a lot easier.
