Dr. Organic Mommy Baby Proofing Tips

Babyproofing your home and outdoor space is important but does not need to be overwhelming. Consider proofing in stages relevant to if you are soon expecting when your baby is starting to explore and move around on their own. I recommend starting with some of the bigger things first while you are expecting:

• Bolt down furniture, including bookshelves, dressers, etc.

• Checking or updating the Smoke and Carbon monoxide detector

• Making sure you have a working Fire Extinguisher

At 6 months I like to do the following before your child becomes too mobile (crawling or starts trying to pull themselves up on their own)

• Pool gate and cover if needed.

• Lower the crib mattress. You may need to lower the mattress to the floor to avoid your

child climbing out of the crib.

• Cords for shades should be mounted or put away/up high

• Installing a Baby gate for any and all stairs. Baby playpens or gates such as this block off areas of a room keep your baby or toddler in a particular area (or away from an area). I recommend this baby gate for the baby/toddler who can climb a baby gate.

• Add corner protectors on sharp table edges

• Baby proof cabinets - I don’t recommend baby proofing drawers, as children will learn they can hurt their fingers. It is important to teach them and model the importance of being mindful of your finger placement. That said, baby proofing cabinets with medicine and harsh cleaning supplies is necessary and I do that with adhesive magnets.

• Protecting outlets if your house was build before 2019

• If you have fireplaces, make sure to teach your littles ones that hot = ouchie. Depending on your usage and type of fireplace, you may want to baby proof it.
